What way is best to open the airway?
Head Tilt - Chin Lift Maneuver
1. Gently tilt the head back. This helps to lift the tongue away from the back of the throat and open the airway.
2. Lift the chin up. This helps to further open the airway and allows air to flow in.
Jaw Thrust Maneuver
This maneuver is used when the head-tilt/chin-lift maneuver is ineffective or in patients with suspected cervical spine injuries.
1. Place your palms on both sides of the person's face, just below the cheekbones.
2. Gently push the jaw forward and up, until the mouth opens.
3. Hold the jaw in this position until help arrives.
