Breath-Holding and Risk of Death: Understanding Hypoxia
Yes, it is possible to kill yourself by holding your breath. When you hold your breath, you are preventing oxygen from entering your lungs and the carbon dioxide levels in your blood increase. This can lead to a condition called hypoxia, which is characterised by the deprivation of oxygen supply to body tissues.
Hypoxia can damage vital organs, including the brain, heart, and kidneys. Eventually, hypoxia can cause death of body cells. When oxygen is deprived from vital organs due to the lack of oxygen, you could lose consciousness from oxygen starvation, leading to potential brain damage or death if medical attention is not received.
