Wisdom Teeth: Are They Really Vestigial?
Wisdom teeth (also called third molars) are not considered true vestigial structures as they are still functional in modern humans, contributing to an ability to chew a wider variety of foods, even though with varying degrees of utility, and therefore provide a selective advantage.
Some structural attributes such as diminished functionality, size reduction, and varying presence suggest reduced significance in our diet, but they have not entirely lost their function. However, due to evolutionary changes in diet and jaw structures, there is often insufficient space in the mouth, leading to impaction and associated complications, thus making their extraction common in modern dentistry.
