Post-Bone Graft Numbness: What to Expect & How Long Does It Last?
The numbness following a dental bone graft procedure can vary from person to person. During the procedure, the dentist or oral surgeon will usually administer local anesthesia to minimize pain and discomfort. The numbness from the local anesthesia typically wears off within a few hours after the procedure.
Additionally, the bone graft site itself can cause temporary numbness or tingling sensation in the surrounding area. This numbness is usually caused by the local nerve tissue's reaction to the surgical trauma and is a normal part of the healing process. The numbness typically resolves gradually over the course of several weeks or months as the grafted bone heals and integrates with the surrounding tissue.
If you experience prolonged or excessive numbness after a dental bone graft, you should contact your dentist or oral surgeon for evaluation and further guidance.
