Baby Swallowed Bleach? Immediate Poison Control Steps & Warning Signs

Do NOT

  • Induce vomiting (bleach re-burns esophagus on the way up)
  • Give neutralizing agents (vinegar, lemon juice — causes heat reaction)
  • Give large volumes of fluid (may increase vomiting risk)
  • Attempt to “dilute” with milk — no evidence of benefit

Do

  1. Wipe mouth/face with damp cloth.
  2. Give small sips of water or milk (≤4 oz total) ONLY if child is fully alert, no respiratory distress, and Poison Control advises.
  3. Keep child upright, calm, monitored.
  4. Bring container/label to ER if directed.

Symptoms of Caustic Injury

ER Evaluation

  • Airway assessment (laryngoscopy if stridor)
  • Early endoscopy (12–24 h) to grade injury (Zargar classification)
  • IV fluids, analgesia, PPI, antibiotics if perforation suspected
  • Admit for observation if Grade 2b or higher

Prevention

  • Store bleach & cleaners in locked cabinet, original containers.
  • Never transfer to unmarked bottles (water bottles, cups).
  • Use child-resistant caps; close immediately after use.
  • Post Poison Control number visibly.
