How is the dermis different from epidermis?
Epidermis:
- The outermost layer of the skin
- Composed of keratinized stratified squamous epithelium
- Several layers of cells provides protection
- No blood vessels
- Contains melanocytes, helps provide pigmentation
Dermis:
- The layer of skin beneath the epidermis
- Composed of connective tissue including fibers of collagen and elastin
- Provides strength, flexibility and elasticity
- Houses hair follicles, blood vessels, sweat glands, nerves and sebaceous glands (oil glands)
