Anatomy of the Throat (Pharynx): Location & Divisions
The throat, also known as the pharynx, is a muscular tube that connects the nasal cavity and mouth to the larynx (voice box) and esophagus. It is located at the back of the mouth and extends from the base of the skull to the level of the sixth cervical vertebra. The throat is divided into three sections:
- Nasopharynx: The upper part of the throat, which is located behind the nasal cavity and above the soft palate.
- Oropharynx: The middle part of the throat, which is located behind the mouth and below the soft palate.
- Laryngopharynx: The lower part of the throat, which is located below the epiglottis and connects to the larynx and esophagus.
