Understanding Throat Pain: Causes, Symptoms & Relief
There are many possible causes for throat pain, including:
* Viral infections, such as the common cold or flu, are the most common cause of sore throats.
* Bacterial infections, such as strep throat, can also cause sore throats.
* Allergies, such as hay fever or food allergies, can cause throat irritation and pain.
* Dry air can irritate the throat and cause pain.
* Acid reflux, a condition in which stomach acid backs up into the esophagus, can cause throat pain.
* Muscle strain, from overuse of the vocal cords or from coughing or sneezing too much, can cause throat pain.
* Tumors, both benign and malignant, can cause throat pain.
In some cases, throat pain may be a symptom of a more serious medical condition, such as a heart attack or stroke. If you experience sudden, severe throat pain, especially if it is accompanied by other symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, or dizziness, seek immediate medical attention.
If your throat pain is mild and does not improve within a few days, see your doctor to rule out any underlying medical conditions.
