Autoimmune Pancreatic Damage: Understanding Type 1 Diabetes

One condition that could result if an autoimmune disease destroyed the cells of the pancreas is type 1 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is a chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps glucose, or sugar, get from the blood into the cells of the body for use as energy. Without insulin, the blood sugar level can get too high, which can lead to serious health problems, including damage to the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, and nerves.
