Oophorectomy: Understanding Ovarian Removal and the Abdominal Cavity
The removal of an ovary, a surgical procedure called an oophorectomy, is typically performed within the abdominal cavity. The abdomen, also known as the abdominal cavity, contains various organs such as the stomach, intestines, liver, pancreas, and reproductive organs.
During an oophorectomy, the surgeon accesses the abdominal cavity either through an open surgical incision or minimally invasive techniques such as laparoscopy. In laparoscopy, small incisions are made, and a camera and surgical instruments are inserted to remove the ovary. Regardless of the approach, the ovary is removed from within the abdominal cavity.
