Christiaan Barnard's Heart Transplant: History, Details & Impact
The first successful heart transplant was performed on December 3, 1967, at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa.
It was conducted by a team of surgeons led by Dr. Christiaan Barnard.
The recipient of the new heart was Louis Washkansky, a 53-year-old man with end-stage heart failure.
The donor was Denise Darvall, a 25-year-old woman who had been declared brain dead after a car accident.
The operation took 9 hours, and Washkansky survived for 18 days after the transplant, before succumbing to complications, including pneumonia.
Despite his death, the success of the first heart transplant paved the way for future advancements in the field of transplantation surgery, saving countless lives.
