Chest Tube Dislodgement: Nursing Protocol & Immediate Actions
If a chest tube is accidentally dislodged, the nurse should:
1. Immediately cover the opening with a sterile surgical dressing. This will prevent air from entering the chest cavity and will help to prevent further collapse of the lung.
2. Notify the physician immediately. The physician will need to assess the patient and decide whether or not the chest tube needs to be reinserted.
3. Provide oxygen therapy to the patient. This will help to improve oxygenation and reduce the risk of respiratory distress.
4. Monitor the patient's vital signs closely. This will help the nurse to identify any signs of respiratory distress or hemodynamic instability.
5. Educate the patient about the importance of keeping the chest tube in place. The patient should be instructed to avoid any activities that could put the chest tube at risk of being dislodged.
