Post-Surgery Diet After Hiatal Hernia Repair: What to Eat
Immediately after surgery:
* Clear liquids, such as water, broth, and popsicles
* Soft foods, such as applesauce, yogurt, and pudding
1-2 weeks after surgery:
* Continue to eat soft foods
* Add in small amounts of solid foods, such as cooked vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains
* Avoid foods that are difficult to digest, such as fried foods, fatty foods, and spicy foods
2-4 weeks after surgery:
* Gradually increase your intake of solid foods
* Continue to avoid foods that are difficult to digest
* You should be able to resume your normal diet by this time
Here are some additional tips for eating after a hiatal hernia repair:
* Eat small, frequent meals throughout the day.
* Chew your food thoroughly.
* Drink plenty of fluids.
* Avoid caffeine and alcohol.
* Elevate your head and upper body when you sleep.
