Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee: Purpose, Role & Responsibilities
PurposeThe Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) Committee develops, implements and reviews policies governing medication-related activities in compliance with state and federal regulations. The Committee makes decisions on drug formulary selection, drug utilization management, and the medication-related policies of the organization. The Committee monitors clinical and business-related outcomes from medication-related decisions and provides education to the healthcare team as appropriate.
Objectives:
- To develop and maintain a formulary that promotes evidence-based, safe, and cost-effective medication use
- To develop, implement, and monitor medication-related policies and procedures that promote optimal patient care and medication safety
- To monitor and assess the quality and effectiveness of medication use through the collection and analysis of data
- To provide education and support to healthcare professionals and patients in matters related to medication use
- To engage in collaborative decision-making with stakeholders, including physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and administrators
