Child Fever Duration: Understanding Viral, Bacterial & Other Causes
The duration of a fever in a child can vary depending on the underlying cause and the individual child's immune response. In general, a fever in a child is considered to be:
- Low-grade fever: 100.4°F to 102.2°F (38°C to 39°C)
- Moderate fever: 102.3°F to 104°F (39.1°C to 40°C)
- High fever: Above 104°F (40°C)
Here is a general guide to how long different types of fevers may last in children:
1. Viral Infections (Common Cold, Flu, etc.):
- Low-grade fever: 3-4 days
- Moderate fever: 2-3 days
- High fever: Usually not more than 24-36 hours
2. Bacterial Infections (Ear Infections, Pneumonia, etc.):
- Low-grade fever: May persist for 5-7 days
- Moderate fever: 3-5 days
- High fever: 2-3 days
3. Teething:
- Low-grade fever: Typically lasts 1-2 days
It's important to note that these are just general guidelines and the duration of a fever can vary from child to child. Persistent high fevers (over 104°F or 40°C) or fevers that last more than 3-5 days should be evaluated by a healthcare provider to determine the cause and receive appropriate treatment.
