Baby-Friendly Gravy Recipe (6 Months+): No Salt Added
To make a gravy suitable for a 6-month-old baby without making it salty:
Ingredients:
- 3 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 tbsp. All-purpose flour
- 1 cup unsweetened almond milk or breastmilk
- 2 tbsp. cooked, pureed vegetables (such as carrots, peas, or squash)
- 2 tsp. chopped fresh herbs (such as parsley, thyme, or basil) - optional
Instructions:
1. Prepare Gravy: In a small saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Whisk in the flour until a smooth paste forms. Gradually whisk in the almond milk (or breastmilk) until the mixture has thickened and reached the desired consistency of gravy.
2. Add Pureed Vegetables: Stir in the cooked, pureed vegetables.
3. Add Herbs (Optional): If desired, add chopped fresh herbs for extra flavor.
4. Simmer: Bring the gravy to a simmer and cook for 5-10 minutes, or until it has thickened and reduced slightly.
5. Serve: Allow the gravy to cool to a safe temperature for your baby to eat. Offer the gravy alongside other pureed foods.
Remember to avoid using salt, as babies' kidneys are still developing and cannot handle excessive amounts of salt. Always introduce new foods to your baby one at a time to monitor for any allergic reactions.
