Breech Birth: Understanding Risks & Safety of Vaginal vs. Cesarean Delivery
Cesareans are often viewed as the safer birthing option for breech babies. However, research shows that's not always the case. Vaginal delivery is generally safer for healthy women in low-risk pregnancies when:
- The baby is head down.
- The mother's pelvis is a normal size.
- The baby's head is no larger than average for gestational age.
- The mother has already given birth vaginally.
While there is an added degree of risk to babies born vaginally in the breech position, a scheduled vaginal breech birth at a hospital equipped with the necessary facilities is generally considered safe for most healthy babies in low-risk pregnancies.
