Bleeding in Early Pregnancy: 10-Week Concerns & Miscarriage Risk
It is possible for a miscarriage to occur even if an ultrasound shows a healthy baby at 10 weeks of pregnancy. While an ultrasound can provide valuable information about the health and development of a fetus, it cannot completely eliminate the risk of miscarriage.
Some possible causes of bleeding during pregnancy include:
Implantation bleeding: This occurs when the fertilized egg implants in the wall of the uterus, usually around 10-14 days after conception.
Ectopic pregnancy: This occurs when the fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, most commonly in the fallopian tube. Ectopic pregnancies can be dangerous and require immediate medical attention.
Molar pregnancy: This is a rare condition in which a non-viable pregnancy develops due to abnormal fertilization.
Placental abruption: This occurs when the placenta separates from the wall of the uterus before the baby is born.
Subchorionic hematoma: This is a collection of blood between the placenta and the wall of the uterus.
Cervical polyps or erosion: These are non-cancerous growths or thinning of the cervix that can cause bleeding.
Threatened miscarriage: This is when there is bleeding and cramping but the cervix is closed and the baby is still alive.
Incomplete miscarriage: This is when some but not all of the pregnancy tissue has passed from the uterus.
Complete miscarriage: This is when all of the pregnancy tissue has passed from the uterus.
Missed miscarriage: This is when the fetus has died but the pregnancy tissue has not been expelled from the uterus.
It is important to remember that bleeding during pregnancy is not always a sign of miscarriage. However, it is always important to consult with a healthcare provider if you experience any bleeding during pregnancy, as it can be a sign of a serious underlying condition. Your healthcare provider can perform further tests and evaluations to determine the cause of the bleeding and provide appropriate treatment or monitoring as needed.
