Causes of Yellow Teeth: Stains, Aging, and Solutions

Tooth discoloration is multifactorial. Understanding the cause guides effective treatment.

Extrinsic Stains (Surface)

  • Chromogenic foods/drinks: Coffee, tea, red wine, cola, berries, soy sauce, curry.
  • Tobacco: Tar + nicotine → tenacious brown/yellow stains.
  • Poor oral hygiene: Plaque/tartar accumulates chromogens.
  • Chlorhexidine rinse (long-term): Brown staining.

Intrinsic Stains (Within Tooth Structure)

  • Aging: Enamel thins → yellow dentin shows through; secondary dentin deposition.
  • Tetracyclines (in utero/childhood <8 yr): Gray-brown bands; permanent.
  • Fluorosis: Excess fluoride during amelogenesis → white/brown mottling.
  • Trauma: Pulpal hemorrhage/necrosis → pink-gray-darkening.
  • Dental materials: Amalgam (gray), root canal sealers.
  • Genetics: Dentinogenesis imperfecta, amelogenesis imperfecta.

Treatment by Cause

Cause Treatment
Extrinsic Prophylaxis (scaling/polishing), Whitening (OTC or professional)
Aging / mild intrinsic Whitening (H₂O₂/Carbamide peroxide)
Severe intrinsic (tetracycline, fluorosis) Veneers, crowns (whitening limited)
Trauma (non-vital) Internal bleaching → then veneer/crown

Prevention

  • Brush 2×/day (fluoride), floss daily.
  • Rinse water after staining foods/drinks.
  • Straw for dark liquids.
  • Quit tobacco.
  • Regular dental cleanings.

Consult a dentist for diagnosis and personalized plan. Whitening is safe and effective for most extrinsic/age-related yellowing.
