What produces skin color?

The pigment melanin produces skin color. Melanin is found in the skin, hair, and eyes. Melanin is produced by cells called melanocytes. The amount of melanin in the skin is determined by genetics. People with more melanin have darker skin, while people with less melanin have lighter skin. Melanin also helps protect the skin from the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays.
