Understanding White Spots on the Foreskin: Causes & Solutions
White or red spots around the rim of the foreskin are generally caused by blocked or inflamed sebaceous glands. Sebaceous glands secrete sebum, an oil that helps keep the skin moist and protected. When these glands become blocked or inflamed, the sebum can build up and can appear as spots on the rim of the foreskin.
Common causes of blocked or inflamed sebaceous glands include:
* A lack of natural lubricant in the foreskin area
* Using harsh or chemical-based soaps
* Wearing tight underwear or long pants with inadequate ventilation
* Lack of hygiene
* Infection
In some cases, red or white spots on the rim of the foreskin can be a sign of a sexually transmitted infection. It is important to see a doctor if you have any change in the appearance, texture or smell of your foreskin or if you experience any symptoms such as:
* Pain or burning when urinating
* Sores that do not heal
* Discharge
* Swelling
* Redness
* Itching
* Bumps
* Warts
These symptoms can be a sign of balanitis, smegma, balanoposthitis or a sexually transmitted infection.
