L5 Pedicle Marrow Edema: Treatment Options & Recovery
Marrow edema in the L5 pedicle can be treated conservatively or surgically. Conservative treatment options include rest, ice, and anti-inflammatory medication. Physical therapy may also be beneficial to help strengthen the muscles around the spine and improve flexibility. In some cases, a doctor may recommend an injection of corticosteroids to help reduce inflammation and relieve pain.
If conservative treatment options do not provide relief, surgery may be necessary to remove the source of the compression and relieve pressure on the nerve roots. The exact surgical procedure will depend on the specific cause of the marrow edema. In some cases, a minimally invasive procedure such as a decompression laminectomy may be sufficient. In other cases, a more extensive surgery such as a spinal fusion may be necessary.
