Fate of Umbilical ArteryAfter birth, the umbilical arteries undergo obliteration, forming fibrous cords that are called the medial umbilical ligaments. These ligaments connect the umbilicus to the urinary bladder.

After birth, the umbilical vein also undergoes obliteration, except for the intrahepatic portion, which persists and becomes a part of the liver as a ligamentous structure called the ligamentum teres.
