Measuring Heart Rate: How to Find a Person's Heartbeat
There are a few ways to say someone's heartbeat.
* By feeling their pulse. This is the most common way to measure someone's heartbeat. Place your index and middle fingers on the person's wrist, just below the thumb. Press down gently until you feel the pulse. Count the number of beats you feel in 15 seconds and multiply by four to get the person's heart rate in beats per minute (bpm).
* By listening to their heart with a stethoscope. This is a more accurate way to measure someone's heartbeat than feeling their pulse. Place the stethoscope over the person's chest, just below the collarbone on the left side. Listen for the "lub-dub" sound of the heart beating. Count the number of beats you hear in 15 seconds and multiply by four to get the person's heart rate in bpm.
* By using a pulse oximeter. A pulse oximeter is a small device that clips onto the person's finger and measures their heart rate and blood oxygen levels. To use a pulse oximeter, place the device on the person's finger and turn it on. The device will display the person's heart rate in bpm.
It is important to note that a person's heart rate can vary depending on their age, activity level, and health. A healthy adult's heart rate is typically between 60 and 100 bpm.
