What are 3 types of circulatory shock?
1. Hypovolemic shock:
Causes:
- Hemorrhage: loss of blood from the circulatory system
- Fluid loss: excessive fluid loss (e.g., dehydration, burns, diarrhea, vomiting)
Effects:
- Decreased circulating blood volume
- Low blood pressure
- Rapid heart rate
- Cold, pale, clammy skin
- Decreased urine output
2. Cardiogenic shock:
Causes:
- Heart attack
- Heart failure
- Severe arrhythmias
Effects:
- Sudden decrease in cardiac output
- Low blood pressure
- Fast or weak pulse
- Confusion or disorientation
- Shortness of breath
- Fluid retention
3. Distributive shock:
Causes:
- Sepsis: severe systemic infection
- Anaphylaxis: severe allergic reaction
- Neurogenic shock: dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system
Effects:
- Vasodilation (widening of blood vessels)
- Decreased blood pressure
- Increased heart rate
- Warm, flushed skin
- Rapid breathing
