Responding to Choking Child: Next Steps After Abdominal Thrusts
Once you have eased the child to the floor, the next step is to call 911 or your local emergency number.
_**Start chest compressions if the child is still unresponsive. For an unconscious child, you should:*_
- **Push hard and fast on the center of the child's chest, 15 compressions in 30 seconds.
- **Allow the chest to return to its natural position after each compression.
- Give two rescue breaths after every 30 compressions. To give a rescue breath:_
- **Pinch the child's nose closed.
- **Cover their mouth with your mouth and blow into their lungs until their chest rises.
- If the child does not start breathing after 30 chest compressions and two rescue breaths, the continue with 5 more cycles of CPR (15 compressions to two breaths) and call 911 or your local emergency number._
You should continue CPR until professional medical attention arrives.
