Performing Abdominal Thrusts for Adult Choking: Proper Hand Placement
When giving abdominal thrusts to an adult who is conscious and choking, position your fist between the person's navel and rib cage.
- Stand behind the person.
- Wrap your arms around the person's waist.
- Clench one fist and place it between the person's navel and rib cage.
- Grasp your fist with your other hand and quickly pull in an upward motion
- Repeat thrusts until the object is expelled or the person becomes unconscious.
- If the person becomes unconscious, begin CPR.
