Strep Throat: Symptoms, Causes, and Effective Treatment
Strep throat is a bacterial infection of the throat and tonsils. It is caused by bacteria called Streptococcus pyogenes, or group A streptococcus (GAS). Strep throat is spread through contact with respiratory droplets from an infected person. Symptoms of strep throat include a sore throat, fever, headache, muscle aches, and fatigue. Treatment for strep throat typically involves antibiotics.
Strep throat usually resolves within 5 to 7 days with treatment. However, it is important to take antibiotics as directed to prevent complications, such as rheumatic fever and kidney inflammation.
In addition to antibiotics, there are several things you can do to relieve the symptoms of strep throat:
* Get plenty of rest.
* Drink plenty of fluids.
* Eat soft, soothing foods.
* Gargle with warm salt water.
* Use a humidifier or vaporizer to keep the air moist.
* Take over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, to reduce fever and pain.
* Avoid smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke.
If your symptoms do not improve after 48 hours of treatment, or if you develop new or worsening symptoms, such as difficulty breathing or swallowing, see your doctor immediately.
