Chiropractic Treatments for Acute & Chronic Back Pain
Chiropractic treatment is a health care approach based on the concept that restricted movement in the spine can result in pain and reduced function. Spinal manipulation and other chiropractic treatments are used to treat acute and chronic back pain.-
Types
-
Acute back pain is pain that may come and go, is usually due to an injury, and ends within six weeks. Chronic back pain is persistent, often worsens over time, and lasts longer than three months.
Spinal Manipulation
-
Spinal manipulation, also known as spinal adjustment, is used by chiropractors to treat restricted mobility. It restores spinal movement which results in improved function and reduced back pain.
Stimulation
-
Electrical muscle stimulation uses a unit that sends a weak electrical current to nerve pathways. This type of treatment is believed to interrupt pain signals.
Massage
-
Massage, as well as stretching, is used by chiropractors to reduce soreness and relax muscles that are shortened. Massage can also help the body release natural painkillers.
Opinion
-
According to the Mayo Clinic, spinal manipulation is effective in treating low back pain if done soon after the pain begins. Spinal manipulation is an accepted treatment and is no longer considered alternative.
