Spinal Injury First Aid: Safe Handling of Unconscious Patients
The head and neck should be supported in a straight line with the body when an unconscious casualty is being turned to their back. The cervical spine should not be flexed or extended at all.
There are other actions you can take when attempting to move a casualty that you should be aware of:
- Don't move them unless there's a life threatening situation.
- If you have to move the casualty, do it with extreme care and support the head, neck, and spine.
- If you suspect a spinal injury, don't move the head or neck at all.
- Call for medical help immediately if you suspect a spinal injury.
