Understanding Period Color: Why is My Period Brown?
Your period is not usually brown through the whole cycle.
During a typical menstrual cycle, the color of menstrual blood can vary.
1. Early in the period (days 1-2)
* The blood may be bright red or dark red. This is because it is fresh blood that is being shed from the uterus.
2. Middle of the period (days 3-4)
* The blood may be red-brown or brown. This is because the old blood from the uterus is mixing with new blood.
* The presence of brown blood during your period is usually normal and simply indicates that the blood has had time to oxidise, or come into contact with oxygen.
3. End of the period (days 5-7)
* The blood may be light pink or brown. This is because it is the last of the old blood that is being shed from the uterus.
If your period is consistently brown throughout the entire cycle, this could indicate an underlying condition, and it is advisable to see a healthcare provider for evaluation.
