Ovarian Function: Egg Production and Ovulation Explained
Yes, the ovaries, which are the primary reproductive organs in females, produce a mature female gamete, or egg cell, each month through a process called ovulation. Ovulation typically occurs once during each menstrual cycle, which lasts about 28 days on average. During ovulation, a mature egg is released from one of the ovaries and travels down the fallopian tube toward the uterus. If the egg is not fertilized by sperm during its journey through the fallopian tube, it eventually disintegrates and is shed along with the uterine lining during menstruation. The process of ovulation is essential for female fertility and reproduction.Ovarian Cancer - Related Articles
