Dilation and Curettage (D&C): Understanding the Procedure & Uses

Dilation and curettage (D&C) is a procedure to remove tissue from inside the uterus. It is done to diagnose or treat certain conditions, such as:

* Abnormal uterine bleeding

* Heavy menstrual bleeding

* Miscarriage

* Retained products of conception

* Uterine fibroids

* Uterine polyps

* Cancer of the uterus

How is a D&C done?

A D&C is usually done in an outpatient setting, meaning you can go home the same day. You will be given local anesthesia to numb your cervix. The doctor will then insert a speculum into your vagina and dilate your cervix. This will allow them to insert a curette, which is a small spoon-shaped instrument, into your uterus. The curette will be used to scrape away the tissue from the inside of your uterus.

The procedure usually takes about 10-15 minutes. You may experience some cramping or discomfort during the procedure, but it should not be painful.

After the procedure

After the D&C, you may experience some light bleeding or spotting for a few days. You may also have some cramping or abdominal pain. These symptoms should go away within a few days.

You should avoid strenuous activity and sexual intercourse for a few days after the procedure. You should also avoid using tampons or douching for a few days.

Call your doctor if you experience any of the following symptoms after the procedure:

* Heavy bleeding

* Severe pain

* Fever

* Chills

* Foul-smelling discharge from the vagina
