Oropharyngeal Airway Sizing: Accurate Selection Methods
There are several methods for selecting an appropriately sized oropharyngeal airway. One common method is to measure the length of the airway from the tip of the nose to the angle of the mandible. This measurement corresponds to the length of the airway that should be inserted into the mouth.
An alternative method involves measuring the distance from the upper lip to the earlobe. This measurement also corresponds to the length of the airway that should be inserted into the mouth.
In addition to these methods, some clinicians also recommend selecting an airway that is the same size as the little finger of the patient. This method is less precise, but it can be useful in situations where other measurements are not feasible.
It is important to note that the size of the airway should also be based on the patient's age and size. Children typically require smaller airways than adults.
