Why do lungs quit working after surgery?

It is not common for lungs to stop working after surgery. Surgeries that involve the lungs (such as lung transplantation or lung resection) are major operations that might carry risks, but complete cessation of lung function, unless planned and temporary, is not the expected outcome.
