What to expect after colposcopy?
Immediately after the procedure:
- Mild cramping or discomfort
- Light bleeding or spotting for a few days (usually no more than a period)
- Some discharge (may be watery, bloody, or contain small tissue fragments)
Within a few days or weeks:
- Results of the colposcopy and biopsy, if performed, will be discussed with you by your doctor
Long-term:
- The colposcopy itself does not have long-term complications
- Treatment may be recommended based on the findings of the colposcopy, which can potentially reduce or prevent risk of developing cervical cancer or its precursors
