Phimosis Alternatives: Exploring Non-Surgical Options & Circumcision
Circumcision is the only definitive treatment for phimosis, which is the inability to fully retract the foreskin. However, there are some non-surgical options that may be effective in resolving phimosis:
- Steroid creams or ointments: Topical corticosteroids applied to the affected area can help reduce inflammation and scarring, making it easier to retract the foreskin.
- Stretching exercises: Gradually stretching the foreskin over time can help improve its elasticity and allow for full retraction. This can be done by gently pulling the foreskin back during urination or washing.
- Dorsal slit: This is a minor surgical procedure that involves making a small incision on the dorsal side (top) of the foreskin. It can relieve tension and allow for easier retraction.
If these non-surgical methods are unsuccessful, circumcision may be necessary to correct phimosis. However, it is important to discuss the options with a healthcare professional to determine the best course of treatment for your individual case.
