How to Deal With Complications From LASIK

LASIK (Laser in Situ Keratomileusis) eye surgery is an outpatient procedure that reshapes the cornea to restore vision to 20/20 or as close as possible to it. Complications can occur with LASIK surgery.

  Learn about the complications that may occur following LASIK. Some of the complications include dry eyes, night glare, double vision, inflammation of the LASIK flap, bulging of the surface of the eye, infection, over-correction, under- correction or regression of vision and irregular astigmatism.

  Figure out if you are actually having a complication. Complications only occur in approximately one to five percent of all LASIK surgeries. Most other issues are considered normal for the recovery period.

  Call and inform your surgeon of the suspected complication. Describe the symptoms as accurately as possible.

  Request medical assistance or learn about procedures to remedy the complication. Sometimes you may need to be seen by the doctor. Other times you will be given advice on how to manage the complication by phone.

  Follow the medical advice to treat the complication. Take all medicine that has been prescribed by your doctor.

  Seek a second opinion if the complication does not resolve or actually worsens. Follow up surgery or special contact lenses may be required.
