TRICARE Laser Eye Surgery Coverage: What You Need to Know
TRICARE covers most laser vision correction procedures through its Standard and Extra plans, including LASIK and PRK. However, there are certain requirements and limitations to be met. To be eligible, you must meet the following criteria:
Active duty service members
Retirees
Family members of active duty members or retirees
Former Reserve or National Guard members who were called to active duty for a minimum of 180 consecutive days
You must also meet the medical criteria for laser vision correction. This includes having:
Stable vision for at least 1 year
No major eye diseases or conditions, such as glaucoma or cataracts
No significant scarring or damage to the cornea
You may also need to meet certain pre-authorization requirements, such as getting a referral from your primary care provider.
If you meet all the requirements, TRICARE will cover most of the costs associated with laser vision correction, including the surgeon's fees, facility fees, and postoperative care. However, you may be responsible for a small copayment or deductible.
It's important to note that TRICARE does not cover laser vision correction for purely cosmetic purposes. The procedure must be deemed medically necessary to improve your vision.
For more information on TRICARE's coverage of laser eye surgery, you can visit the TRICARE website or contact your local military medical treatment facility.
