Is fluid buildup normal after knee replacement surgery?
Fluid buildup or effusion is common after knee replacement surgery. Blood and other fluids may pool in the surgical site as part of the natural healing process. The body sends an increased fluid supply to the area during the early stages of tissue repair.
For the initial post-op phase, your medical team may use dressings, elevation, or drainage methods such as aspiration or compression therapy to manage the volume of fluid and decrease risk of infection or other complications.
