Recovery from a Vaginal Hysterectomy
A vaginal hysterectomy is a procedure in which the uterus is removed through the vagina. This form of hysterectomy has a shorter recovery time than methods requiring abdominal incisions.-
After Surgery
-
Patients may recover in the hospital for one to three days, according to Mayo Clinic. Medications may be given to decrease pain and prevent infection.
Recovery Time
-
Many women recover within two weeks, but precautions should be taken for six weeks following surgery. Do not lift anything over 20 pounds or have sex during this time.
Physical Effects
-
It is normal to have vaginal bleeding and pain for a few days after a hysterectomy, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. If the ovaries were removed along with the uterus, menopause will begin after surgery.
Emotional Effects
-
Women may feel relieved after a hysterectomy, but depression can also occur. Discuss serious emotional effects with your doctor.
Warning
-
Contact your doctor if you experience increased pain, heavy bleeding or nausea and vomiting after a vaginal hysterectomy.
