CNA Toenail Care: Scope of Practice & Regulations
Generally, CNAs (Certified Nursing Assistants) are not trained or authorized to cut patients' toenails. This task is typically performed by nurses, podiatrists, or other healthcare professionals who have received specific training in foot care.
However, the scope of practice for CNAs may vary depending on state regulations and facility policies. In some cases, CNAs may be allowed to perform certain nail care tasks, such as trimming nails that are excessively long or removing hangnails, under the supervision of a registered nurse.
If you are a CNA and have questions about your scope of practice, it is important to consult your supervisor or refer to the policies and procedures established by your facility. Cutting patients' toenails without proper training or authorization can pose risks to the patient and could lead to disciplinary action.
