Infant CPR: A Step-by-Step Guide for Rescuing a Baby
## **CPR Steps for Infants**
1. Call 911. Put a phone on speakerphone or pass it to someone else so you can start CPR.
2. Check the baby's responsiveness. Gently shake and shout, "Are you okay?" If the baby is unresponsive, start chest compressions.
3. Give chest compressions. If the baby is unresponsive, the next step is to start chest compressions:
- Place the baby on a firm surface. Kneel beside the baby's head.
- Place the heel of one hand on the center of the baby's chest, between the nipples.
- Give chest compressions at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute.
- Each compression should be 3⁄8 inches (0.95 cm) to ½ inches (1.3 cm) deep.
- Allow the chest to recoil completely after each compression.
4. Deliver rescue breaths. After every 30 chest compressions, stop compressions and provide two rescue breaths.
- Cover the baby's mouth and nose with your mouth.
- Blow two gentle breaths into the baby's lungs, each lasting about 1 second.
- Watch to see if the baby's chest rises and falls with each breath.
5. Continue hands-only compressions. If you have been providing rescue breaths and do not want to continue, you can switch to hands-only CPR.
- Continue giving chest compressions at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute.
- Each compression should be about 3⁄8 inches (0.95 cm) to ½ inches (1.3 cm) deep.
- Allow the chest to recoil completely after each compression.
6. Continue CPR until help arrives. Continue giving chest compressions and rescue breaths if you are able. The baby may eventually start breathing and moving. If this happens, stop CPR and monitor the baby's breathing. If the baby stops breathing again, start CPR again.
