CPR Steps: A Clear Guide to Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
C: Compressions* Place the heel of one hand on the center of the person's chest, between the nipples.
* Place your other hand over your first hand, interlacing your fingers.
* Give 30 chest compressions at a rate of 100 to 120 per minute.
* Push down 3.8 to 5 cm (1.5 to 2 inches) on the chest.
* Allow the chest to recoil between compressions.
P: Protective Airway
* Tilt the person's head back to open the airway.
* Pinch the person's nose shut.
* Give two rescue breaths, each lasting about one second.
R: Rescuing breaths
* Watch for the person's chest to rise and fall with each breath.
* If the chest does not rise, reposition the person's head and give another rescue breath.
Continue CPR until:
* The person starts breathing,
* A defibrillator is available, or
* Emergency medical help arrives.
