Checking a Pulse After a Stroke: Location and How To
For a stroke victim, you should find the pulse at the carotid artery in the neck.
To check the carotid pulse:
1. Place two fingers (index and middle finger) gently on the side of the neck, just below the angle of the jaw.
2. Press gently until you feel the pulse.
3. Count the number of beats for 15 seconds and multiply by 4 to get the heart rate per minute.
A normal heart rate for an adult is between 60 and 100 beats per minute. If the heart rate is too fast, slow, or irregular, it may be a sign of a stroke. Seek medical attention immediately if you suspect someone is having a stroke.
