Proper CPR Technique: Chest Compressions & Hand Placement
You are not directed to find the inferior tip of the sternum and move two fingers superiorly to perform CPR effectively.
The American Heart Association recommends the following step for performing CPR on an adult:
1. Check the scene and verify the person needs help.
2. Call 911 or your local emergency number.
3. Open the person's airway and determine if they are breathing.
4. If the person is not breathing or only gasping, begin CPR.
5. Give 30 chest compressions. Each compression should be about 2 inches deep and at a rate of 100 to 120 per minute.
6. Give 2 rescue breaths, allowing 1 second for each breath.
7. Continue until help arrives.
