Claustrophobia vs. Agoraphobia: Understanding the Differences
Both are anxiety disorders involving fear of specific situations, but the feared situations differ:
- Claustrophobia: Fear of being trapped in confined spaces (elevators, tunnels, airplanes, MRI machines). Avoidance of places where escape feels impossible.
- Agoraphobia: Fear of situations where escape might be difficult or embarrassing (crowds, bridges, shopping malls, movie theaters). Avoidance of open or public spaces.
Some individuals experience both (mixed anxiety disorder). Professional help can manage symptoms and improve quality of life.
