Recognizing Shock: Key Signs and Symptoms
The most obvious signs of shock include:
* Cool, pale, or clammy skin. This is due to decreased blood flow to the skin.
* Rapid heart rate. This is the body's attempt to compensate for the decreased blood flow by pumping more blood.
* Rapid breathing. This is the body's attempt to get more oxygen into the blood.
* Confusion or disorientation. This is due to decreased blood flow to the brain.
* Nausea or vomiting. This is due to the body's attempt to redirect blood flow to the vital organs.
* Loss of consciousness. This is due to severe decreased blood flow to the brain.
If you see someone exhibiting any of these signs, it is important to call 911 immediately.
