Attending Physician: Definition, Role & Responsibilities

The attending physician is the doctor (or osteopath) who has primary responsibility for the care of the patient. In teaching institutions, the term designates the most senior physician in a patient's care. In the absence of that physician, the patient is assigned to another attending physician.
