Understanding & Managing Tourette Syndrome: Risk Factors & Support
Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by tics. Tics are involuntary, repetitive movements or vocalizations. The exact cause of TS is unknown, but it is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. There is no known way to prevent TS, but early diagnosis and treatment can help to manage symptoms and improve quality of life.
Here are some things that may increase the risk of TS:
* Having a family history of TS or other tic disorders
* Being male
* Having certain medical conditions, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
* Being exposed to certain environmental toxins, such as lead or mercury
It is important to note that these factors do not necessarily mean that a child will develop TS. If you are concerned that your child may be at risk for TS, talk to your doctor.
